I’m going to take a week off from the series on Spiritual Myths to share a Father’s Day gift I received a few years ago that still brings tears to my eyes.  As you can see below it was a framed picture from my son Phil.

Father's Day

Framed pictures & note from my son Phil for my Father’s Day Gift 2006

At the top was a Scripture from Psalm 78:5-7 which underscores the importance of passing the baton of faith on to the next generation:

“He established a testimony in Jacob and approved a law in Israel, which he commanded our father’s to teach their children, that the next generation might know them, even the children yet unborn, that they may arise and tell them to their children, that they should put their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.”

On either side were two photos.  On the left was an old photo of me carrying Phil when he was a little boy.  On the opposite side was a picture of Phil with his son Andy on his shoulders.

Here’s what Phil wrote that really touched me:

Dad,

Upon seeing this picture of Andy on my shoulders, I reflected how as a young child I so loved it when you would carry me.  Just as my children do now, I remember asking you to, “Hold me Daddy.”  I’m sure there were times when you felt tired or I felt heavy after long distances, but I’ll always remember feeling so content in your arms.

And even though as an adult son there have been times when you’ve had to “carry” me, I am so thankful you continued to reach out your arms and provide the same loving embrace.  I assure you the lessons you have imparted will be passed on to the next generation.

I love you Dad.  Happy Father’s Day!
