These are unsettling times. The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump yesterday underscores the current ferocity of the political and ideological divide in our nation.  Thankfully, the former president’s life was spared, but sadly an innocent bystander was killed and others wounded by the assassin.

I believe God has blessed America because of the Christian principles that gave us our foundations and provided moral consensus. However, our nation is on shaky ground, not because of a polarizing political candidate, but because we have forsaken God and His word. We need to humble ourselves and pray for the light of Christ to shine brightly in our country. Only God can heal our deep wounds.

I recently wrote a blog post expressing my disappointment with both Presidential candidates. I suggested it would be better to have a choice between two younger, morally upright, and less divisive candidates who could unite and inspire America. Some disagreed with me, yet they were able to express those differences without vitriol. However, that seems to be rare these days.  Most political and ideological rhetoric being spewed from both sides has lacked decorum and has only served to escalate tensions.

In these volatile times, when many lose their composure, Christians must not lose theirs. Instead, we should model behavior that communicates our ultimate hope lies in Jesus Christ. It is understandable that many are upset. There are significant, ideological issues at stake in the upcoming election. However, the Bible says, “In your anger do not sin” (Ephesians 4:26), so while you may be angry, use restraint.

James 3:5 reminds us that our words can be powerfully harmful, like a great fire ignited by a tiny spark. So let’s guard our speech and make sure “no unwholesome talk comes out of our mouths” (Ephesians 4:29).  Avoid name-calling and hyperbole. Christians must be strong and courageous but must also ensure they speak the truth in love.  Let’s heed the plea of the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:18, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

There are many unanswered questions about the attempted assassination at this point. Was the attempted assassin a random shooter or a political operative? Why didn’t the Secret Service spot a shooter on a nearby roof and do something about it? Did God intervene and spare the life of Donald Trump for a divine purpose?

We may not have those answers until eternity. In the meantime, it is best to seek Godly wisdom and discernment. For “…the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness” (James 3:17-18).
